Sudha
Srivastava
Sudha Srivastava came to painting the long way round. She read mathematics to a master's degree, took a B.Ed. and spent her working life teaching before she set the classroom aside for a brush. She is largely self taught, and the last ten years have gone into acrylic on canvas, painted with the encouragement of a family that kept telling her to carry on.
The work moves between landscape, abstraction, architecture and memory. Banaras and its ghats, the Himalayan valleys she grew up in, sacred spaces, lotus ponds and the turn of the seasons: these are the places she keeps coming back to, and each canvas is an attempt to hold light, colour and feeling still for a moment.
She has never tied herself to one theme or one style, and that freedom is the point of it. Her paintings have been shown across India and hang in private collections here and abroad. Everything is painted at her studio in Ahmedabad and sold one canvas at a time.
